The Moonlight Pool's Secret
Lily was supposed to be sleeping. But through her window, she saw something shimmering in the backyard—something that wasn't there before.
She tiptoed downstairs in her fuzzy slippers and pushed open the back door. There, glowing softly like liquid moonlight, was a small pool. But it wasn't an ordinary pool. The water sparkled with tiny lights, like stars captured in glass.
"Hello?" Lily whispered.
A face popped up from the water—not a scary face, but a friendly one with silvery skin and eyes that changed color like soap bubbles. "Hello! I'm Finn! Are you here for swimming too?"
Lily's mouth opened. "You can talk?"
"Everyone talks underwater," Finn said. "We just use bubbles instead of air. Want to see?"
Before Lily could answer, Finn splashed water toward her. But the water didn't get her wet—it turned into butterflies that fluttered around her head.
"I'm a moon-fish," Finn explained. "This pool appears only when someone needs a friend. Are you lonely?"
Lily thought about her new school, where everyone already had best friends. She thought about sitting alone at lunch. "Maybe a little."
"Swimming with someone makes everything better," Finn said. "The water holds you up, so you don't have to be strong alone. That's what friends do—they help you float when you're tired."
Lily stepped into the pool. The water was warm, like a blanket fresh from the dryer. She began swimming beside Finn, and he showed her how to make the water sing with her fingers, how to blow perfect bubbles, and how the tiny lights in the pool were actually wishes from children who had visited before.
"Make a wish," Finn said.
Lily closed her eyes and wished for courage at school.
The pool's lights swirled around her like a hug. When she opened her eyes, Finn was fading.
"Thank you for swimming with me," he whispered. "Remember: you never swim alone in your heart."
The pool disappeared, leaving only dew on the grass. But in her pocket, Lily found something—a smooth silver stone that glowed when she was brave.
At school the next day, Lily sat beside a girl reading alone. "Hi," Lily said, her hand touching the warm stone in her pocket. "I'm Lily. Want to be friends?"
The girl smiled. "I've been hoping someone would ask."
And somewhere, far away, under a moonlit pool, Finn blew a celebration bubble.
