The Moonlight Pool Promise
Felix the fox had never seen a dog up close before. All the forest animals had warned him: dogs were loud, clumsy, and not to be trusted. But when he spotted Barnaby, a golden retriever puppy, sitting alone by the old stone wall, something made Felix pause.
Barnaby wasn't loud or clumsy. He was crying softly, his tail tucked between his legs. Felix's heart did a little flip.
"What's wrong?" Felix asked, stepping from the ferns.
Barnaby jumped. "A fox! Mom said foxes are sneaky."
"And I've been told dogs are scary," Felix countered, sitting gracefully beside him. "But you don't look very scary right now."
Barnuby wiped his eyes. "I'm lost. I was running after a butterfly and went too far. Now I can't find my way home."
Felix thought for a moment. "I know somewhere that might help. The Moonlight Pool. It shows you what you need most — if you're brave enough to look."
"Really?" Barnaby's ears perked up. "Will you take me?"
Felix nodded. "But we have to go running. The pool only appears at twilight, and we don't have much time."
Together they ran through the forest, fox and dog, orange fur and gold fur blurring together. Felix darted between trees while Barnaby lumbered after, his paws thumping happily. They ran past burrows and streams, until suddenly — there it was.
The Moonlight Pool was small and perfectly round, its surface smooth as glass despite being nestled among twisted roots. Moonlight made it shimmer like liquid starlight.
"Look," Felix whispered.
Barnaby peered into the water. The pool didn't show his reflection. Instead, it showed a cozy house with a red door, smoke curling from the chimney, and a woman calling "Barnaby! Barnaby!" in the distance.
"That's home!" Barnaby yipped happily. "But how do I get there?"
The water rippled, showing a path through the woods.
"Follow that way," Felix said. "But Barnaby?"
"Yes?"
"Next time you see a fox, don't believe everything you hear. Some of us are quite nice."
Barnaby licked Felix's cheek. "And if you see a dog, give us a chance too."
Felix walked Barnaby to the edge of the forest and watched until he saw the red door open and a joyful reunion. As he turned back to his burrow, Felix smiled. Sometimes the best friends are the ones you're told to avoid — and sometimes running toward adventure leads you exactly where you need to go.
