The Moonlight Pool
Lily couldn't sleep. The moon was so bright through her window that it looked like someone had spilled a jar of silver paint across the floor. She tiptoed outside to follow it.
In the middle of her backyard, something amazing had appeared. A shimmering **pool** of liquid moonlight rippled softly, glowing with a gentle blue light that made the garden flowers seem to dance. Lily leaned closer, and something splashed!
A tiny **goldfish** popped its head above the surface. But this wasn't like the fish at school. Its scales sparkled like tiny stars, and when it spoke, its voice sounded like wind chimes.
"Hello, Lily! I've been waiting for you."
"You can talk?" Lily gasped.
"I'm not really a fish," the goldfish explained. "I'm a fallen star who forgot how to fly back home. The moon made me this pool of light to stay in, but I need to return to the sky before sunrise, or I'll fade away forever."
Lily's heart thudded. "How can I help?"
"You must carry me through the Dream Paths while **running** as fast as you can. We only have until dawn!"
Lily scooped up the star-fish gently, and suddenly the garden transformed. Flowers became glowing lanterns. Trees bent down to form an archway. The moonlight pool stretched into a path of sparkling light.
They began running through a world of wonders. Clouds turned into trampolines they bounced across. Stars dropped like golden apples, and Lily caught them in her free hand. A friendly moon-rabbit hopped alongside them, showing shortcuts through nebula tunnels painted with swirling colors of purple and green.
"Faster!" urged the goldfish. "The sky is getting lighter!"
Lily's legs burned, but she didn't stop. She thought of all the times she had wanted to give up—on math problems, on learning to ride her bike, on anything hard. But this was different. The star-fish needed her.
Finally, they reached the highest cloud of all. Below them, the whole world slept. Above them, the first star still twinkled.
"Throw me!" cried the goldfish joyfully.
Lily took a deep breath, summoned all her strength, and tossed her friend upward.
WHOOSH!
The goldfish burst into brilliant light, growing larger and brighter, arcing through the sky like a shooting star in reverse. It settled perfectly among its star family, twinkling with gratitude.
"Thank you, Lily!" the star whispered down. "Whenever you see me shine, remember: you're braver and stronger than you know."
Lily woke up in her bed as the first real sunlight touched her face. Had it all been a dream? But there, on her windowsill, lay a single scale that shimmered like a tiny piece of moonlight.
She smiled, knowing that some adventures are real, even when they happen in our dreams.
