The Moonlight Guardian's Game
Lily and Max loved playing in their backyard at twilight. Their favorite game was a magical mix of padel and baseball they'd invented themselves. Lily would serve the glowing rubber ball with her padel racket, and Max would swing his baseball bat to send it soaring into the purple sky.
One evening, the ball sailed over the fence and landed in the mysterious garden next door. The old house had been empty for years.
"I'll get it!" Max whispered, crawling through a hole in the fence.
Lily followed, her heart pounding. The garden was overgrown with twinkling fireflies and silver flowers. And there, holding their glowing ball, stood a lumpy figure with tangled leaves for hair and moss-covered skin.
"A zombie!" Max gasped, hiding behind Lily.
The creature shuffled forward, clutching the ball. "Zzzz-ed..." it moaned softly. "Zed... not zombie."
Lily stepped closer. "You're Zed?"
The creature nodded sadly. "Everyone runs away. They think I'm scary. I just... lonely."
Lily noticed something amazing — Zed's eyes sparkled like tiny stars, and around his neck hung a dusty baseball card from fifty years ago.
"Do you want to play with us?" Lily asked.
Zed's leafy face lit up. "Play? Really?"
Soon, the most magical game began. Zed was surprisingly good at padel — his mossy hands could spin the ball in curves no human could match. When he used the baseball bat, fireflies swirled around him like a sparkling tornado.
"You're part of our team now, Zed," Max laughed, high-fiving Zed's hand, which felt like warm pudding.
That night, they learned that sometimes the scariest things are just the loneliest. And friendship, they discovered, is the most powerful magic of all — it can turn any stranger into family, and any ordinary backyard into a place where wonders never cease.
From then on, every twilight, three friends played their special game. And if you looked closely at the fence next door, you could see a fresh coat of paint — in rainbow colors — with a sign that read: ZED'S MAGICAL GARDEN, ALL WELCOME.
