The Moonlight Bear's Secret

Leo was eight years old, and his best friend was a stuffed bear named Barnaby. Barnaby had missing ear fuzz and one button eye that drooped a little, but Leo loved him more than anything.

One night, Leo couldn't sleep. He crept to the window with Barnaby tucked under his arm. The moon was enormous—so big it looked like you could climb a ladder right up to it.

"I wish you could run with me, Barnaby," Leo whispered. "I wish you were my real friend."

Barnaby's button eye twinkled.

Suddenly, the bear stretched his fuzzy arms and let out a tiny growl. "I've been waiting for you to say that, Leo!"

Leo gasped. Barnaby hopped off the bed and shook out his stuffing. "Come on! We only have until sunrise!"

They went running through sleeping streets, past Mrs. Higgins' bakery (where the air smelled like dreams and cinnamon), all the way to the edge of the Whispering Woods. Trees there had leaves that shimmered like silver.

"I have a secret," Barnaby said, his voice rumbling like gentle thunder. "Once every hundred years, bears like me need something special to stay real. It's called a moonlight vitamin."

He pointed to a clearing where fireflies danced in patterns that looked like glowing letters.

"The moonlight vitamin comes from sharing the most magical moment with someone who truly cares," Barnaby explained. "That's why I waited for you."

Leo's heart swelled. He grabbed Barnaby's paw. "I'll always care about you. You're my best friend in the whole world."

A beam of pure silver light shot from the moon, wrapping around them both. Leo felt warm all over, like drinking hot chocolate on a snow day.

When they got back to Leo's room, Barnaby was still real—and always would be now.

"What did the moonlight vitamin taste like?" Leo asked.

Barnaby smiled. "Like friendship, Leo. Like friendship."

They fell asleep curled up together, both dreaming of running through starlit meadows, adventures just beginning.
