The Midnight Swimming Pool
Lily loved summer nights. When everyone else was sleeping, she would sneak to the backyard and dip her toes in the pool. But tonight was different.
As she stepped outside, the pool was glowing. Not just reflecting the moonlight – it was actually shining from deep below, like a thousand tiny stars had decided to live underwater. Lily leaned closer. The water wasn't moving like normal. It was swirling in gentle circles, creating little sparkles that danced on the surface.
Without thinking, Lily slipped into the water. But instead of sinking, she began floating upward. The pool had become a door to something magical.
She swam through clouds that tickled her skin like cotton candy. Stars zoomed past like excited fireflies. Then she saw him – a small, shimmering creature with silver skin and eyes that changed color like a rainbow. He was splashing around, trying to swim but flipping in circles.
"Are you okay?" Lily asked.
The creature looked up. "I'm Pippin! I've always wanted to go swimming, but I'm made of starlight. I keep floating away!"
Lily smiled. "I can help! Swimming isn't about moving fast – it's about working with the water."
She showed Pippin how to glide, how to use gentle movements instead of fighting against the water. Soon they were swimming together, racing comets and diving through nebulae. Pippin was the most magical friend Lily had ever made.
"You know," Pippin said, "I've watched over this pool for a hundred years, waiting for someone who wasn't afraid of magic. You're special, Lily."
As dawn approached, Pippin guided Lily back through the glowing pool. "Visit me anytime. Real friends never say goodbye forever."
Lily woke up in her bed, wondering if it had all been a dream. But when she checked her pocket, she found a tiny silver star that shimmered with Pippin's rainbow colors. Some friends are worth keeping, even if they live in the stars.
