The Midnight Storm Adventure
Lily was lying in bed when the first flash of lightning illuminated her room. Boom! Thunder rattled the window. She sat up, her heart beating fast, when she heard a soft meow.
Her fluffy cat, Whiskers, stood by the door, his green eyes glowing in the dark like tiny emeralds.
"Lily, wake up!" someone seemed to whisper. But the room was empty.
Then Lily noticed her iPhone on the nightstand was glowing, even though it was turned off. Strange, sparkling lights swirled across the screen like tiny captured stars, guiding her forward.
Whiskers meowed again and trotted into the hallway. With another flash of lightning, Lily grabbed her phone and followed.
The house was silent except for the storm outside. Whiskers led her to the back door, which was slightly open. Rain pattered on the porch like a gentle drum.
As Lily stepped outside, she saw something moving in the garden. It shuffled slowly, arms outstretched, looking just like a zombie from the stories her older brother told!
Lily almost screamed, but then the figure turned—and it was just her grandpa, sleepwalking in his fuzzy bathrobe!
"Grandpa!" she called softly, but he didn't hear. He was walking toward the old oak tree, where the lightning flashes revealed something amazing—a nest of baby owls had fallen, and their mother was trying to protect them from the rain.
Lily understood. Her grandpa must have heard them too in his sleep. She started running toward him, careful not to wake him suddenly. Whiskers bounded ahead, his tail like a fluffy flag.
The mother owl watched nervously as Lily carefully guided her sleepwalking grandpa back toward the house. Her iPhone's soft screen light helped her see the path through the rain.
Once Grandpa was safely back in his armchair, Lily went outside with an umbrella. The mother owl seemed to nod at her. Together with Whiskers standing guard, Lily gently moved the baby owls to a safer branch, out of the rain.
The next morning, Grandpa had no memory of his midnight adventure. But from that night on, every time lightning flashed during a storm, Whiskers would meow at the window, as if reminding Lily of their secret mission.
And sometimes, when the storms were fierce, Lily would spot the mother owl watching over her house, as if saying thank you to the brave girl who didn't let fear stop her from helping others—even when they shuffled like zombies in the dark.
