The Midnight Spy Club

Lily was the best spy in the neighborhood, or at least she pretended to be. Every night, she would sneak out of her room with her black hat pulled low over her eyes, her dad's old iphone in hand (for taking "secret evidence"), and her orange cat Mittens following close behind.

One spooky Halloween night, Lily spotted something strange through her neighbor's fence. What looked like a green zombie was stumbling around Mr. Henderson's garden! Lily gasped. Mittens meowed nervously.

"Don't worry, Mittens," Lily whispered. "Spies are brave."

She crept closer, iphone ready to capture the proof. The zombie was eating... pumpkins? It was making funny munching sounds like a bunny, not a monster at all.

Then the zombie turned around and Lily gasped again. It wasn't a real zombie at all! It was her classmate Lucas in a costume, and he was crying.

"Lucas?" Lily called out.

Lucas jumped. "Oh, hi Lily. I was just... practicing being scary for tomorrow's party. But I'm not scary at all."

Lily's cat rubbed against Lucas's leg, purring loudly. "Actually," Lily said thoughtfully, "the best spies know that being scary isn't what makes you special. Being kind and brave does."

Lucas wiped his eyes. "You really think so?"

"I know so," said Lily, pulling her spy hat off her head. "Hey, want to join my spy club? We're looking for someone good at puzzles."

Lucas smiled, his zombie costume suddenly looking much less frightening. "Only if Mittens can come too."

And that's how the Midnight Spy Club became the Midnight Spy Club and Cat Appreciation Society, with two brave spies, one excellent cat, and many adventures still ahead of them. Because sometimes the scariest things turn out to be friends you haven't met yet.
