The Midnight Spy Club

Lily pressed her **palm** against the cool glass of her bedroom window. The moon was full, and something was moving in the garden below.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" whispered Barnaby, her scruffy golden **dog**, thumping his tail on the rug. (Okay, Barnaby didn't actually talk, but Lily understood every wiggle and woof.)

Lily grabbed her plastic detective kit from under the bed. She was a **spy** tonight, on a very important mission. The neighbor's cat had been acting strange all week, and Lily was determined to discover why.

She tiptoed downstairs in her fuzzy slippers, Barnaby padding silently beside her. Out in the garden, they found their first clue: a trail of bright pink flower petals leading to the old oak tree.

But that wasn't the strangest part.

Standing by the tree was Mr. Finchly, Lily's usually-grumpy neighbor. He was walking in slow, jerky circles, arms outstretched, making soft groaning sounds. His white **hair** was sticking straight up, messy as a bird's nest.

"Is he..." Lily gasped. "Is he a **zombie**?"

Barnaby let out a small "ruff" that sounded suspiciously like a laugh.

Just then, Mr. Finchly spoke. "Baaaaarnaaaaaa-by..." He was trying to say the dog's name! But he sounded so funny!

Lily stepped forward. "Mr. Finchly? Are you okay?"

The old man jumped, then spotted them. A huge smile spread across his face. "Oh! Hello there, little detective. I'm practicing for the neighborhood talent show! I'm doing a comedy routine about... well, about being clumsy and confused."

He demonstrated his best zombie walk, and Lily giggled.

"You're really good!" she said. "But why the flower petals?"

"My granddaughter Emma helped me set up a trail for my act," he explained. "She said I needed more pizzazz."

Mr. Finchly invited Lily and Barnaby to see the full show right there in the moonlit garden. He told jokes, did silly walks, and even taught Barnaby to give a high-five.

Lily learned something important that night: sometimes things seem scary or strange, but if you're brave enough to investigate, you might discover something wonderful instead.

The best spies, she decided, weren't the ones who caught bad guys. They were the ones who found the magic hiding in plain sight, right in their own gardens, waiting to be discovered.

As she crawled back into bed, Barnaby curled up at her feet, Lily knew tomorrow would bring another adventure. But tonight's mystery had been solved with friendship, laughter, and a very funny zombie who wasn't a zombie at all.
