The Midnight Pyramid
Lily lay in her bed, watching the full moon paint silver squares on her floor. Suddenly, a soft bark echoed from outside. She peeked through her window and saw Buster, her golden retriever, wagging his tail at something glowing near the old oak tree.
Lily tiptoed downstairs and into the backyard. There, beside the tree, stood a crystal pyramid no taller than her knee, pulsing with gentle rainbow light. Buster nosed it, and the pyramid shimmered like ripples in a pond.
"Hello, friend," a voice whispered. The pyramid floated upward, and suddenly, the whole backyard transformed. The grass became a carpet of soft stars. The old oak tree stretched into a tower of twisting vines.
"Come!" said the pyramid, now the size of a small house. "We have adventures waiting!"
Buster bounded ahead, his paws making tiny splashes in the star-grass. Lily followed, her heart racing with excitement. The pyramid's light created a pathway across the sky, and suddenly they were swimming through clouds that felt like warm cotton candy.
"Where are we going?" Lily called, doing a backstroke through a particularly fluffy cloud.
"To the Dream Pyramid!" Buster answered — and Lily realized her dog could talk! "It's where all children's wishes come true!"
They reached a magnificent pyramid made entirely of wishes, glowing with the hopes of children everywhere. Inside, Lily found shelves filled with glowing jars. Each held a different wish: a kitten, a red bicycle, a trip to Mars.
"Choose one wish for yourself," the pyramid hummed, "and one for someone else."
Lily thought carefully. She wished for Buster to always understand her — which explained his new talking ability! For her second wish, she chose something for the new girl at school, Maya, who had no friends yet.
Back in her bedroom, the first light of dawn peeked through her curtains. Buster curled up at her feet, his tail still wagging. At school that day, Maya ran up to Lily, her eyes shining.
"I dreamed I made a new friend last night!" Maya said. "And here you are!"
Lily smiled, knowing that some magic — and some friendships — are real, whether you're awake or dreaming.
