The Midnight Pool Secret

Lily loved summer nights, especially when the moon hung low like a glowing lantern. She would tiptoe outside to the swimming pool, her bare feet padding softly on the warm concrete. Her black cat, Shadow, always followed, his golden eyes shining in the darkness.

"We're spies tonight," Lily whispered, tying a towel around her neck like a cape. "Our mission: discover pool secrets!"

The pool water sparkled like diamonds under the moonlight. Lily peered through her spy binoculars—really just two toilet paper rolls taped together. Suddenly, strange bubbles appeared in the deep end. Pop, pop, POP!

Then something green broke the surface. It had lanky arms and bumpy skin, but when it turned around, its face crinkled into a friendly smile.

"Hello there!" said the creature, waving a webbed hand. "I'm Zed!"

Lily gasped. "You're... you're a..."

"A zombie?" Zed laughed, doing a little happy dance. "Yes, but don't worry! I'm a swimming zombie! I only come out at midnight when the magic is strongest."

Shadow crept closer and sniffed Zed's knee. The zombie reached into the water and pulled out a beautiful glowing shell. He offered it to the cat, who purred with delight.

"I've been swimming for hours," Zed said, "but I don't have any friends to play with. Everyone runs away when they see me."

Lily's heart melted. She remembered her mother's words: "Real friends look past what's outside to find what's inside."

"Will you teach me your best zombie swimming tricks?" Lily asked, rolling up her pajama pants.

Zed's green face beamed. "Would I EVER!"

That night, under the silver moon, they learned that the best spies don't just discover secrets—they discover friends in the most unexpected places.
