The Midnight Pool Portal
Lily loved her backyard pool, but she loved it most at midnight when the moon painted silver ripples across the water.
One hot July night, unable to sleep, Lily crept outside in her pajamas. The pool water glowed with an unearthly blue light. Something shiny dangled from the pool's robotic cleaner – it was the thick black cable that usually lay coiled on the deck.
But tonight, the cable wasn't just a cable. It swayed and danced like a friendly snake, beckoning her closer.
"Come down!" whispered a bubbly voice from the water.
Lily peered over the edge. Tiny creatures with sparkly skin and rainbow hair waved up at her. "We're the Water Sprites! This cable is our midnight elevator!"
The sprites wrapped the cable around a floating rubber raft. "Hold on tight!"
Lily's heart raced as she stepped onto the raft. The cable pulled her slowly down, down, down into the most magical place she'd ever seen. The water didn't feel wet – it felt like floating inside a diamond!
"Welcome to our kingdom!" cheered the sprites. "But oh no, our grandmother is losing her sparkle!"
The eldest sprite, Marina, looked worried. "She needs magic vitamin crystals from the Sun Cave, but it's too far for us to swim."
Lily remembered something. She'd taken her chewy vitamin earlier that day – and one had fallen into her pocket! It was shaped like a star and glowed orange.
"Would this help?" Lily asked, holding it up.
Marina gasped. "A human vitamin crystal! It's filled with sunshine magic!"
The sprites led Lily through coral castles and schools of fish that sang like bells. They reached the Sun Cave, where grandmother sprite lay fading. Lily placed the vitamin crystal on her forehead.
Bursts of golden light swirled around! Grandmother sprite sat up, glowing brighter than ever. "Thank you, human child! You've saved our kingdom!"
As a reward, the sprites gave Lily a magic pearl that would always help her swim like a fish. The cable carried her back up just as the first hint of dawn painted the sky.
Lily slipped into bed, the pearl warm against her skin. From then on, every night at midnight, she'd hear tiny splashes and bubbly giggles from the backyard – her new friends, forever grateful for the girl who brought sunshine magic to the water.
