The Midnight Pool Party
Ten-year-old Leo loved swimming more than anything. Every summer, he spent hours in his backyard pool, diving like a dolphin and racing imaginary mermaids. But tonight was different.
A storm was brewing. Dark clouds rolled across the sky like woolly blankets. Lightning flashed — crack! zap! — painting the night purple and gold.
Leo couldn't sleep. He crept downstairs in his pajamas and peeked out the back door. The pool water glowed under each lightning flash, shimmering like liquid stars.
Then he saw something strange. A greenish figure stood by the pool's edge, swaying back and forth.
Leo gasped. "A zombie!"
He grabbed his flashlight and tiptoed outside. "Go away!" he called out bravely. "This is my pool!"
The figure turned slowly. It was... his big sister Maya! She was covered in green mud from the garden, wearing her old zombie costume from Halloween, and practicing for the school play.
"Maya?" Leo lowered his flashlight. "What are you doing?"
Maya grinned, her white face paint cracking. "Couldn't sleep either. The storm is too exciting." She dipped her foot into the pool. "Want to see something magical?"
She jumped in! The water around her began to glow — soft blue lights, like tiny stars. "Bioluminescent algae!" Maya explained. "It only appears during storms. Watch this."
She splashed, and droplets flew up like glittering diamonds. Lightning flashed again, and for one perfect moment, the whole pool sparkled and shimmered as if filled with magic.
Leo jumped in too. Swimming through the glowing water felt like flying through space. They laughed and played until the storm passed, two happy "zombies" dancing in a pool of stardust.
That night, Leo learned something wonderful: sometimes the scariest things turn out to be the most magical adventures — especially when you face them together.
