The Midnight Pool Party
Lily was supposed to be sleeping, but the moonlight dancing on her floor made her curious. She crept downstairs in her pajamas, following the silver light that seemed to be calling her name.
In her backyard, something impossible had happened. The small inflatable pool that usually sat empty and deflated was now filled with glowing water that sparkled like liquid stars. And standing beside it was a dog — but not just any dog. This dog had fur the color of moonlight and eyes that held entire galaxies.
"You're late!" said the dog, who introduced himself as Orion. "We're having a pool party, and you're the guest of honor."
Lily's eyes widened. "But I don't have my swimsuit!"
Orion laughed, and his laugh sounded like wind chimes. "In the Midnight Pool, pajamas are perfect. And you won't believe who's waiting for you."
Before Lily could ask, she saw movement in the glowing water. Stars were swimming — actual tiny stars, leaving trails of silver wherever they went. Moonbeams were sliding down the water like rainbow snakes. And there, floating on what looked like a cloud raft, were the North Star and the Big Dipper having a splash contest.
"Come in!" called the North Star. "The water's made of dreams tonight!"
Lily stepped in, and the most wonderful thing happened. She wasn't wet — she was filled with warmth, like being hugged by sunshine. Her feet didn't touch bottom because she was suddenly running on the water, her toes creating ripples that turned into butterflies.
"I'm running on stars!" Lily gasped, skipping across the magical surface while Orion swam beside her, leaving trails of constellations in his wake.
The moon above winked at her. "Every child gets one midnight pool party," it whispered. "What matters is what you do with it."
Lily thought of her brother, who was scared of the dark. She scooped up some glowing water in her hands. "Can I share this?"
Orion's galaxy-eyes shone brighter. "That's why we invited you. Kindness is the most powerful magic."
That night, Lily left glowing water in jars by her brother's bedside, in her parents' room, even for the lonely old lady next door. When morning came, the pool was empty and deflated again. But everywhere she'd placed the star-water, dreams had bloomed — sweet ones full of adventure and courage.
Lily learned that magic isn't about what you find. It's about what you share. And sometimes, the most wonderful adventures happen when you're supposed to be asleep.
