The Midnight Pool of Dreams
Lily's golden retriever, Buster, had a secret. Every full moon, he would sneak out to the old swimming pool behind the abandoned house at the edge of town.
One night, Lily followed him. What she saw made her eyes go wide.
The pool, usually covered in leaves, shimmered like liquid diamonds. And there, splashing happily, was Buster — along with a massive brown bear and a tiny bull!
"Come in!" called the bear, waving a paw. "The water's magical tonight!"
Lily stepped closer. The bull, no bigger than a puppy, did a happy spin. "I'm Bubbles," he squeaked. "This is Rosie the bear. We're the Midnight Swimming Club!"
"But..." Lily's mom had always told her to stay away from bears and bulls. They were dangerous.
Rosie gently laughed. "Stories make us scary, but friendship makes us soft. In this magical pool, we're all just friends who love swimming."
Buster barked joyfully, splashing water everywhere. Lily looked at his wagging tail, then at Bubbles doing cannonballs off the diving board, and Rosie carefully helping a dragonfly back onto a lily pad.
Lily dipped her toes in the water. It felt like warm honey. She jumped in!
That night, they swam under the stars. The bear taught her to float. The bull raced her across the pool. The dog cuddled with her when she got cold.
"See?" whispered Rosie as they got out. "The world is full of magic if you're brave enough to make new friends."
Lily walked home with Buster, her heart full. Some of the best stories, she learned, aren't the ones people tell you — they're the ones you live yourself.
And every full moon since, Lily and Buster return to the midnight pool, where the bull still does cannonballs, the bear still teaches floating, and they all swim together under the twinkling stars.
