The Midnight Pool Mystery
Lily loved running through her backyard at night, especially during summer storms. She was fast, but her cat Mittens was faster — a sleek shadow darting between raindrops.
Tonight, the pool glowed with an strange blue light. Lightning flashed across the sky, making the water shimmer like magic.
"Are you ready?" Lily whispered to Mittens.
The cat blinked her golden eyes and gave a tiny meow. They had a secret mission.
Lily's neighbor Mr. Pemberly always sat by his window at midnight, staring at the pool with a telescope. Everyone called him the neighborhood spy, but Lily didn't think spies could be kind old men who shared cookies.
"We'll find out," she promised Mittens.
As lightning cracked overhead, Lily crept to the pool's edge. The water rippled. Something small and shiny broke the surface — a tiny silver fish with rainbow scales!
"It's a moon fish," she gasped.
Mittens pawed at the water gently. More fish appeared, dancing in patterns that looked like writing.
"They're trying to tell us something!"
Lily grabbed her notebook from her pocket. The fish swam in circles, then straight lines, then made the shape of a heart.
Mr. Pemberly's window opened. "Do you see them too?" he called softly.
Lily nodded. "They're beautiful!"
"They only come during lightning storms," the old man explained. "I've been waiting fifty years to show someone. Will you help me protect them?"
"Every summer," Lily promised.
Mittens purred, curling around Lily's legs. The three friends — girl, cat, and kindly not-a-spy — watched the magical fish dance until dawn.
Some secrets are worth keeping, especially when they're shared with friends.
