The Midnight Pool Mystery

Maya pressed her **palm** against the rough bark of the ancient coconut tree, her heart racing with excitement. Below her, the abandoned swimming **pool** shimmered with mysterious blue light, even though there was no moon.

"Are you sure you saw something?" whispered Leo, her best friend, who was pretending to be a **spy** on a secret mission. He adjusted his imaginary sunglasses and peered through his binoculars (which were really two toilet paper rolls taped together).

"I definitely saw something glowing," Maya insisted. "And I heard music too. Like tiny bells ringing."

The children crept toward the pool, their bare feet silent on the warm grass. At the edge of the water, they gasped. Sitting on a floating **papaya** was the strangest creature they had ever seen. It had green skin, sparkly eyes, and moved a bit slowly, like it was waking up from a very long nap.

"Is that... is that a **zombie**?" Leo whispered, hiding behind Maya.

The creature looked up and smiled. "Oh, hello! I'm not a zombie, whatever that is. I'm Zimby, a Sleepy Sprite from the Magic Realm. I've been napping for fifty years!"

Maya laughed. "You're not scary at all!"

Zimby explained that he was the Guardian of the Pool, and he had fallen asleep while protecting a magic seed. Now that he was awake, the pool could grant one wish to pure-hearted children who showed bravery instead of fear.

"I wish," Maya said thoughtfully, "that every pool in the world could have a magical friend like you, so no one would ever have to swim alone."

Zimby's eyes twinkled. "That's the kindest wish anyone has ever made!" He sprinkled glowing dust over the water, and suddenly hundreds of tiny sprites popped up from pools all around the world.

"And for you two," Zimby added, "whenever you visit this pool at midnight, we'll have the most amazing adventures together."

Maya and Leo high-fived, their **palm**s slapping together. They had discovered something magical, made a new friend, and learned that sometimes the scariest-looking things turn out to be the most wonderful surprises of all.
