The Midnight Pool Game

Lily crept outside in her pajamas, following the silver moonlight to the old swimming pool in her backyard. The water shimmered like liquid diamonds, even though it had been empty for years.

"Hello there!" called a voice from the deep end.

Lily gasped. A boy sat on the bottom of the empty pool, his skin slightly green and his hair messy with leaves. He looked like something from her storybooks—a zombie! But this zombie wore a bright red baseball cap and held a shiny baseball bat.

"I'm Zed," he said, smiling warmly. "Want to play?"

Lily should have been scared, but Zed's eyes twinkled like fireflies. She nodded and climbed down into the pool. As her feet touched the bottom, the dry concrete transformed into soft, magical grass.

"I've waited so long for a friend to play baseball with," Zed said, tossing her a ball that appeared from nowhere.

They played the most wonderful game under the stars. The moon was their spotlight, and crickets provided the music. Every time Zed hit the ball, it turned into glowing butterflies before landing in Lily's glove.

"Why are you a zombie?" Lily asked between catches.

Zed laughed, the sound like wind chimes. "I'm not really. I'm the spirit of this pool's magic. Long ago, children played here every day. When the pool closed, I became lonely. My zombie appearance is just how imagination looks when it's forgotten."

Lily's heart swelled. "You're never alone now. I'll come back every night!"

The grass sparkled brighter, and Zed's green skin began to glow with golden light. The baseball in his hand transformed into a beautiful friendship bracelet woven from moonbeams.

"Friendship keeps magic alive," Zed said, tying the bracelet around Lily's wrist. "Now you can visit whenever you dream."

When Lily woke up in her bed the next morning, a glowing baseball cap sat on her nightstand. She put it on and smiled, knowing that somewhere between dreams and magic, a friend was waiting for their next midnight game.

The empty pool in the backyard didn't seem empty anymore. It was full of wonder, friendship, and the promise of adventures yet to come.
