The Midnight Pool Game

Lily loved her old red baseball cap more than anything. She wore it everywhere—even to swimming lessons at the community pool.

One warm summer evening, Lily forgot her hat at the pool. When she snuck back to get it, she couldn't believe her eyes. A huge white bull was standing by the edge of the empty pool, gazing up at the stars.

"Hello?" Lily whispered.

The bull turned. His eyes were kind and gentle. "I'm Barnaby," he said softly. "I live on the farm next door. On hot nights, I come here to look at the stars reflected in the water."

Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk!"

"Only to children who wear magical hats," Barnaby smiled. "Yours must be special."

Lily's hat lay on the bench. She picked it up and noticed something she'd never seen before—tiny silver stitches that sparkled like moonlight.

"I've always wanted to play baseball," Barnaby sighed, "but I'm too big, and my hooves can't hold a bat."

Lily's face lit up. "We can play right now! The pool is empty, and my dad always says baseball is about heart, not size."

All night long, they played the most magical game ever. Lily pitched rolled-up socks, and Barnaby nudged them with his nose. They splashed through the shallow end, laughing as the echoes carried their joy to the stars.

When the sun began to rise, Barnaby trotted home, but not before making Lily a promise. "Every full moon, meet me here. And remember—the real magic isn't the hat. It's believing that anyone can play."

Lily waved goodbye, her heart full. She couldn't wait for next month's midnight pool game with her extraordinary friend.
