The Midnight Pool
Lily discovery was pure magic. One warm summer evening, as fireflies blinked like tiny stars in her backyard, she noticed something strange near the old oak tree. Where there had been only grass before, now shimmered a small crystal pool, glowing with soft silver light.
She crept closer, her heart beating fast. In the center floated a single goldfish— but not like any goldfish she had ever seen. This one was the color of a bright orange sunrise, with scales that sparkled like tiny diamonds.
"Hello," Lily whispered, leaning over the water's edge.
To her amazement, the goldfish swam right up to her. "Hello, Lily," it said in a voice like gentle ripples. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."
The goldfish explained that it was actually a star that had fallen from the sky, transforming into a fish to survive the magical pool between worlds. Only a true friend could help it return home—but it would mean the pool would disappear forever.
Lily thought about how lonely she was sometimes, moving to a new town where she hadn't made any friends yet. This magical creature had become her first real friend in this strange new place. How could she let it go?
But looking at the goldfish's shimmering scales, she understood what true friendship meant. Sometimes friendship means letting go, even when it makes your heart hurt.
"What do I need to do?" Lily asked bravely.
"Just wish upon your own heart," the goldfish said, " and let me go with love."
Lily closed her eyes and made her wish—not for herself, but for her friend to be happy.
When she opened her eyes, the goldfish was rising from the pool, glowing brighter and brighter until it burst into a thousand tiny lights, shooting up into the night sky like orange sparkles. The pool vanished, leaving only a single perfect orange blossom on the grass where it had been.
Now, whenever Lily feels lonely, she looks up at the stars and smiles. One of them always twinkles back—orange and bright—reminding her that true friendship never really disappears. It just changes form, glowing in your heart forever.
