The Midnight Pool

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's cottage in the woods. Every summer, she explored the forest trails until her feet were tired from running and her pockets were filled with interesting stones.

One warm evening, Lily followed a path she'd never noticed before. It wound through tall trees until suddenly—there it was. A small crystal pool reflected the stars like a mirror, and the water glowed softly with silver light.

Lily crept closer, trying to be like a spy on a secret mission. That's when she saw him—a large brown bear with kind golden eyes, sitting by the water's edge. Most children would be scared, but Lily felt something strange. The bear nodded, as if he'd been waiting for her.

"I am Barnaby," the bear said, and Lily gasped because bears don't talk! "This is the Moon Pool. It shows the true hearts of those who visit."

Lily peeked into the glowing water. Instead of her reflection, she saw scenes from her life—sharing her lunch with a lonely boy at school, helping her little brother learn to tie his shoes, reading bedtime stories to her grandmother.

"The pool shows kindness," Barnaby explained. "You have a good heart, Lily. Will you be my friend?"

She nodded without hesitation. That summer, Lily visited Barnaby every night. They explored the forest, and he taught her the language of birds and the names of stars. She told him about school and her dreams of becoming an animal doctor.

On the last day of summer, Barnaby gave her a small silver stone from the pool. "Whenever you feel lonely, hold this and remember—kindness makes you never truly alone."

Years later, Lily became that animal doctor she'd dreamed of being. And sometimes, when she needed courage, she'd hold the silver stone and remember the bear who taught her that the best magic of all is simply being a good friend.
