The Midnight Pool

poolwaterfriend

Lily couldn't sleep. The moonlight through her window was too bright, too inviting. She tiptoed downstairs and out to the garden, where something magical caught her eye.

A glowing pool had appeared in the center of her backyard, shimmering with liquid silver. Lily knelt beside it, and the water didn't look like ordinary water at all — it sparkled with tiny stars that swirled and danced like captured galaxies.

"Hello?" Lily whispered, and a face bubbled up from the depths.

A tiny creature, no bigger than her thumb, with skin like moonbeams and hair made of flowing water, popped to the surface. "I've been waiting for someone like you!"

"I'm Lily. What are you?"

"I'm a pool spirit! This magical pool appears only when children believe in impossible things." The creature did a somersault, sending ripples of rainbow colors across the water. "I'm lonely. Will you be my friend?"

Lily's heart swelled. She'd never had a magical friend before! "Yes! But how did you get here?"

"Every time a child makes a wish on a shooting star, a drop of stardust falls to earth. Enough stardust makes a pool like this one." The spirit splashed joyfully. "Would you like to see where I come from?"

Lily nodded, eyes wide.

The pool spirit took her hand, and suddenly they were falling upward into the night sky! They soared past constellations that winked at them, through clouds that tasted like cotton candy, and into a kingdom where rivers flowed with glowing lemonade and trees grew jellybean fruits.

"This is where dreams are made!" the spirit said. "But it needs children's imagination to keep it beautiful."

Lily gasped as they spotted a dreary corner where the colors were fading. "We should help!"

Together, they painted the gray hills with sunshine yellow, planted flowers that giggled when tickled, and taught the grumpy clouds how to smile. By dawn, the dreamland sparkled brighter than ever.

As they returned to her backyard, the magical pool began to fade. "Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked.

"Whenever you believe in magic, I'll be here," the spirit promised. "Remember: the world needs wonder, especially from those who dare to dream big."

The pool disappeared, but in its place lay a single gem that twinkled like a captured star. Lily smiled, clutching her treasure. Some friends are worth believing in — even when they're made of water, moonlight, and impossible things.
