The Midnight Padel Match
Lily loved the old padel court behind her house. Its cracked concrete and faded lines held secrets, or so she believed. Every evening at sunset, she'd practice her swings against the wire fence, dreaming of magical matches.
One stormy night, lightning flashed across the sky like giant fireworks. Lily peeked through her curtain and gasped. Someone was on the court! A strange figure shuffled back and forth, racket dangling from one greenish hand.
"A zombie!" she whispered, both terrified and thrilled.
The creature moved clumsily, missing every ball. Lily's heart went out to him. She grabbed her jacket and crept outside.
"Excuse me?" she called. "Do you need some help?"
The zombie jumped, his glowing eyes wide. "Oh! You can see me?" His voice sounded like autumn leaves crunching.
"You're not scary," Lily observed.
"I'm Zed," the zombie smiled crookedly. "I love padel, but I'm terrible at it. I only come out during lightning storms because that's when the magic is strongest."
Lily's eyes sparkled. "I can teach you!"
For an hour, they practiced together. Zed learned to run properly instead of shambling. He mastered his grip, his swing, even a trick shot or two.
"You're a natural!" Lily cheered.
"It's because I have a friend who believes in me," Zed beamed.
As the storm faded, Zed grew transparent. "Thank you, Lily. You taught me that friendship is the real magic."
"Come back tomorrow!" she called.
"Every lightning storm," he promised. "And remember, anyone can shine with the right friend by their side."
Lily waved as Zed vanished into the night, her heart full of wonder. Some zombies, she realized, just needed someone to believe in them.
