The Midnight Padel Match
Lily was lonely. Every afternoon, she practiced padel against the garage wall, thwacking the ball with her racket. *Thwack, thwack, thwack.* But playing alone wasn't fun.
One full-moon night, she heard splashing from the backyard pool. Peeking through the curtains, Lily gasped. The water glowed silver, and rising from the depths was a creature with a lion's body, eagle wings, and a human face—a sphinx!
"Young player," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes, "I have watched you practice. Do you wish to play a true match?"
Lily scrambled outside in her pajamas. "But I have no partner!"
*CRASH!* The garden fence shook. Through it stepped a enormous bear, holding a padel racket between its paws.
"Bernardo hasn't played in centuries," the sphinx rumbled, curling up beside the pool like a golden mountain. "He was the kingdom's champion until he fell asleep in a magical cave. Your racket's song woke him."
Bernardo blinked gentle brown eyes and grinned. "Play?"
Lily's heart swelled. They played under moonlight while the sphinx told riddles between points. The bear's serve was legendary—*WHOOSH*—but Lily's quick feet kept her in the game. When the ball splashed into the pool, it floated back up, sparkling with magic.
They played until dawn painted the sky pink. Final score: 42-40, Bernardo's win.
"Rematch tomorrow?" Lily asked, breathless with joy.
"Every moonlight," the sphinx promised, fading back into the pool's depths.
Bernardo squeezed Lily's shoulder with a massive paw. "Friends always play together."
That morning, Lily fell asleep dreaming of rackets, riddles, and the best friends a girl could ever find. Sometimes, she learned, the most magical games are the ones you never knew you were waiting to play.
