The Midnight Padel Game
Lily's cat, Whiskers, was acting strange. At the stroke of midnight, the golden tabby kept pawing at the back door, meowing urgently.
"What is it, Whiskers?" Lily whispered, slipping outside in her pajamas.
The swimming pool in their backyard was glowing – shimmering with rainbow lights that danced across the water. Whiskers leaped in, and Lily gasped as the cat floated on the surface instead of sinking.
"Come in!" called a friendly voice. A green figure rose from the water – a zombie, but not a scary one. He wore a Hawaiian shirt and had a flower tucked behind his ear. "I'm Zippy!"
"You're... a zombie?" Lily asked, stepping closer.
"Yes, but I'm the friendly kind," Zippy grinned. "Want to see something magical?"
He led them through a secret passage behind the waterfall. They emerged into a hidden courtyard where an enormous sphinx sat guarding a strange court with glass walls and a net.
"Welcome to the Magic Padel Court," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I am Sunny. Zippy brings visitors here for the most important game."
"Padel?" Lily tilted her head.
"It's like tennis, but with walls you can hit the ball against!" Zippy handed her a sparkling blue racket. Whiskers received a tiny golden one.
The game began. Magical balls zoomed and zinged. Whenever Lily hit one, it turned into butterflies. When Zippy hit, stars burst forth. Whiskers tapped balls with his nose, making them chime like bells.
At first, Lily wanted to win. But then she noticed something – Zippy was cheering for her good shots, and Sunny was smiling at every point, no matter who scored. Whiskers purred happily.
"I'm not keeping score!" Lily laughed suddenly, hitting the ball to Zippy just so he could make more stars.
Sunny's eyes twinkled. "The real magic isn't winning. It's playing together."
They played until dawn, laughing and creating magic together. When the sun peeked over the horizon, Zippy hugged Lily goodbye. "Come back anytime. Friendship is the best game of all."
Lily and Whiskers floated back through their pool just as the morning light filled the yard. The magical glow faded, but Lily knew the real magic was still there – in new friends and in playing for joy, not just for winning.
