The Midnight Garden Spy

Lily's goldfish Finny wasn't ordinary. At midnight, he floated to his bowl's edge. "The Sphinx needs us!" he whispered in tiny bubbles.

Outside, an orange fox waited. "Felix - spy fox," he announced with a wink. "Secret mission tonight!"

In the moonlit garden, something groaned near the rosebushes. A small zombie bunny dragged one foot, the other flopping loosely. "Zed!" Finny cheered. "He's a zombie from the Old Wizard's garden - mostly harmless, sometimes falls apart!"

Zed's button eye dangled. "Must... help... Sphinx," he mumbled.

The Great Sphinx sat beside the fountain, her golden lion body majestic, her human face sad. "I forgot my riddle! Without it, I can't guard the Dream Gate!"

Lily gasped. "But dreams must be protected!"

"Exactly," said Finny. "Only clever spies like Felix can sneak past the Dream Gate's locks. Only magical creatures can see the Sphinx. Only a believing child can solve the riddle!"

"And Zed?" asked Felix.

"Zombies never give up!" Zed declared, suddenly standing straight.

The Sphinx smiled. "Then here is my challenge: What is small as a goldfish, clever as a fox, brave as a zombie, and sees what others cannot?"

Lily closed her eyes. "A friend!"

The Sphinx purred with approval. "Correct. Friendship unlocks the Dream Gate."

That night, every sleeping child dreamed of magical adventures. Lily's friends vanished with dawn, but Finny swam in his bowl as if nothing had happened. Still, Lily winked whenever she passed, and sometimes, just sometimes, Finny winked back.
