The Midnight Garden Spy
Lily was the best **spy** in the neighborhood. Or at least, that's what she told herself. Every night, she'd slip on her trench coat (Dad's old shirt, tied at the waist) and sneak into the garden to investigate mysteries. Usually, those mysteries involved finding out which neighbor's cat was knocking over the trash cans. But tonight was different.
Tonight, something magical was happening in the garden.
Lily crept through the moonlit flowers, her flashlight cutting through the shadows like a tiny sword. Then she saw it—a shining crystal **pyramid** in the middle of the vegetable patch. It pulsed with soft blue light, and strange symbols glowed along its sides. What was it doing there?
Suddenly, a figure emerged from behind the tomato plants. Lily gasped. It was green and lopsided, with messy black **hair** that stuck out like straw. It shuffled slowly, arms outstretched.
A **zombie**! In her garden!
Lily almost ran. But then she noticed something. The zombie wasn't groaning or looking for brains. It was... gently patting a frightened bunny that had hopped into the garden. The bunny nuzzled against the creature's hand, calm and safe.
"Excuse me," Lily whispered, stepping forward. "Are you... real?"
The zombie jumped—yes, jumped! And turned around. It wasn't a zombie at all. It was a boy about her age, covered in green face paint and wearing an old costume.
"I'm Zane," he said shyly. "I was playing pretend, and I found this pyramid thing. It started glowing when I touched it."
Together, they examined the mysterious pyramid. As their fingers brushed against it simultaneously, **CRACK!** A bolt of **lightning** shot from the sky—without a cloud in sight—and struck the crystal. But it didn't destroy it. The pyramid absorbed the light, and suddenly, the garden around them transformed.
Fireflies danced in patterns that spelled out words. The flowers grew taller and bloomed with stars instead of petals. The pumpkin patch pumpkins began to glow like little lanterns.
"Make a wish!" Zane whispered.
Lily closed her eyes. "I wish for a friend who likes adventures as much as I do."
Zane grinned. "Granted."
The pyramid faded away with the sunrise, but something remained. Every night since, Lily and Zane meet in the garden. Sometimes they spy on mysteries. Sometimes they pretend to be zombies and monsters. And sometimes, on the clearest nights, they catch a glimpse of that crystal pyramid twinkling in the stars above, reminding them that magic hides in the most unexpected friendships.
