The Midnight Garden Spy

spyzombierunningbear

Lily was the best spy in all of Maple Street. Every night, she pulled on her fuzzy socks and crept downstairs, her magnifying glass clutched tight. Her mission? To discover the magical secrets that bloomed in her garden when the moon rose high.

One Tuesday, as she was crouching behind the pumpkin patch, she saw it — a zombie butterfly! Its wings were dusty and gray, and it fluttered in funny little zig-zags, bumping into flowers like it had forgotten how to fly. Lily gasped. This was the most important discovery any spy had ever made!

The poor butterfly looked so tired. Lily reached out, and it landed on her nose. Its wings felt like velvet. She realized the zombie butterfly wasn't scary at all — it was just lost and confused. Someone needed help.

Suddenly, a great big bear lumbered out from behind the oak tree. But this wasn't a scary bear either. His fur was sprinkled with tiny stars that twinkled like Christmas lights. His name was Barnaby, and he was the Guardian of Lost Things.

"I've been looking for him everywhere!" Barnaby rumbled softly. His voice sounded like warm honey pouring over pancakes. "Zippy here got caught in a dream storm. His magical dust washed right off!"

Lily knew what to do. She was running to her garden shed before Barnaby even finished speaking. She grabbed her jar of pixie dust — collected from fireflies last summer — and three perfect flower petals. Mixing them together, she created the most sparkly powder anyone had ever seen.

"Zippy needs to remember his magic," Lily said, sprinkling the dust over the zombie butterfly's wings.

Slowly, wonderfully, Zippy's wings began to glow. First pink, then purple, then brilliant blue! He zoomed into the air, performing loops and swoops that made moonbeams dance.

"Thank you, Spy Lily!" Zippy chimed. "I was so afraid I'd never fly again!"

Barnaby wrapped Lily in a sparkly bear hug. "The best spies," he whispered, "are the ones who use their powers to help friends."

Lily crept back to bed, her heart full of stardust and magic. Some spies searched for secrets. But Lily knew the truth: the very best thing to discover was how to be a good friend.
