The Midnight Garden's Secret
Leo loved bedtime, but tonight his golden retriever Sunny kept whining at the window. Moonlight spilled across the backyard where something strange flickered between the rose bushes.
"Stay here, Sunny," Leo whispered, slipping outside. The grass felt cool beneath his bare feet as he crept toward the old stone statue Grandma had planted among the flowers—a funny little figure with mossy hair and one arm raised like it was waving.
But it wasn't waving. It was shivering.
Leo gasped. The stone figure cracked open like an egg, and out tumbled a tiny creature with green skin, silver eyes, and flowers woven through her hair. She stretched her arms and yawned.
"Thank you for freeing me!" she said in a voice like wind chimes. "I'm Zara, guardian of the Midnight Garden."
Sunny bounded outside, tail wagging furiously. The dog licked Zara's face, making her giggle.
"I was cursed to become a zombie statue by a grumpy gnome who hated flowers," Zara explained sadly. "Every night at midnight, I have until sunrise to find the Golden Buttercup that breaks the spell. But I've been trapped so long..." She glanced at the horizon where dawn threatened.
Leo grabbed her mossy hand. "We'll help you! Sunny, track the flower!"
The dog's nose twitched. Sunny started running—fast—across the lawn and through the hedge that led to the mysterious woods beyond. Leo and Zara chased after, laughing as fireflies lit their path like tiny lanterns.
They found the Golden Buttercup glowing in a hidden clearing where the grumpy gnome slept. Zara plucked the flower gently, and her stone skin began to soften and warm.
"You helped me even though I looked scary," Zara said, hugging Leo and Sunny. "That's the real magic—friendship sees what's inside hearts."
As dawn painted the sky pink, Zara transformed into a beautiful garden fairy with shimmering wings. She sprinkled glittering dust over Leo and Sunny.
"Come visit anytime," she whispered, vanishing into the flowers.
Leo climbed back into bed, Sunny curled up at his feet. Outside, the statue was gone, replaced by the most beautiful roses anyone had ever seen. Sometimes, Leo discovered, the scariest things hold the most wonderful secrets—and true friends help you find them.
