The Midnight Garden Friend
Lily's cat Whiskers always dashed to the garden at midnight. One curious night, Lily followed in her fuzzy slippers. There, among the moonlit vegetables, something strange stirred.
A lumpy green figure rose from the spinach patch! Lily gasped—it looked like a zombie from her storybooks, all mossy and slow. But this zombie held a tiny bouquet of spinach leaves and wore a flower crown made of dandelions.
"Don't be scared," the figure croaked kindly. "I'm Sprout, the garden guardian."
Whiskers purred around Sprout's mossy knees. The cat had known all along!
Sprout explained that spinach grew magical at midnight. "One leaf makes you brave as a lion. Two leaves let you speak with animals. Three leaves..." Sprout winked, "that's still a secret."
Lily's eyes sparkled. "Can we be friends?"
Sprout's mossy face stretched into a smile. "Friendship is the strongest magic of all."
Every midnight after, Lily visited her magical friend. They sang with crickets, danced with fireflies, and shared spinach sandwiches. Sprout taught Lily that even things that seem scary at first might be wonderful friends.
The grown-ups never believed her story. But Whiskers knew. And every morning, Lily's lunchbox contained three perfect spinach leaves—her friend's gift of magic, friendship, and midnight adventures.
