The Midnight Garden Adventure

bullcatzombie

Luna was a small black cat with white paws that looked like she'd walked through fresh snow. Every night, she curled up at the foot of Mia's bed, purring like a tiny motor. But when the moon rose high and silver, Luna's true adventures began.

One Tuesday night, Luna heard something strange in the garden. Not a mouse. Not a owl. Something... bumping.

She crept to the window and saw amazing things. First, she saw Barnaby—the old ceramic bull that sat in the flowerbed during the day. But tonight, Barnaby was moving! His painted brown spots were glowing, and his ceramic legs were prancing through the petunias.

"Hello, little friend!" Barnaby mooed softly. His voice sounded like wind chimes. "Tonight is the Night of Waking!"

Luna's green eyes grew wide. "Waking?"

Then she saw him—a lumpy green figure staggering between the tomato plants. He had messy hair, one button eye, and clothes that looked like they'd been patched a hundred times.

"A zombie!" Luna gasped, her fur puffing up like a dandelion.

But the zombie didn't want to eat brains. He waved shyly. "I'm Zed. I'm a zombie stuffed animal. Mia's little brother lost his button eye, and I've been searching for it all night."

Barnaby nodded wisely. "The Night of Waking is when lost things come alive to find what they've lost."

Luna's heart melted. This wasn't scary at all—it was magical! "I'll help! My eyes work best in the dark."

Together, the three friends searched the garden. Luna spotted something shiny near the roses. A button! Not just any button—a blue one with a star inside.

Zed's one good eye twinkled. "That's it! That's my eye!"

Barnaby used his strong ceramic nose to gently push the button closer. Luna pawed it into Zed's reach. With a happy pop, Zed pressed it into his empty eye socket.

"Thank you!" Zed cheered, spinning in a clumsy circle. "Now I can see properly!"

The three friends celebrated by chasing fireflies and making wishes on shooting stars. As the sky turned pink with dawn, Barnaby grew still. Zed grew still. Luna curled up on Mia's bed, purring with a secret.

Some nights, when Mia couldn't sleep, she'd whisper, "Luna, what do you do out there?"

Luna would just blink and smile, knowing that the best magic happens when you help friends find what they've lost—even if one's a zombie who's actually just kind, and lonely, and missing a button eye.
