The Midnight Fox

Maya's palm was sweating against her phone screen as she crouched behind the maintenance shed. This was it—the moment they'd been planning for weeks. The cable that Jax had spliced into the school's fiber network should give them exactly three minutes of unrestricted access before the firewall noticed anything.

"You got this, Maya," Jax whispered from the other side of the shed, his usual confidence barely masking his own nerves. They were trying to uncover what the administration was hiding about the new student tracking system everyone called "the Fox."

Maya's fingers flew across her keyboard, sweat making her grip slippery. Two minutes left. Then she saw it—screenshots of private messages, location data, even photos from students' phones, all being siphoned to a third-party server. The Fox wasn't just monitoring attendance. It was profiling them.

"Time!" Jax hissed, and Maya yanked the cable loose just as footsteps approached from the main building. They were both running before she even stuffed her laptop back into its bag, sprinting across the dark athletic field toward the fence line where they'd slipped in earlier.

Her lungs burned but she couldn't stop grinning. This was it—their first real act of rebellion, and they'd actually pulled it off. Tomorrow they'd blow this wide open on every social platform. Tonight, though, as they collapsed behind the convenience store a block away, breathless and vibrating with adrenaline, Maya knew something had shifted.

They weren't just students anymore. They were the ones who'd exposed the Fox. And somehow, knowing she could actually do something that mattered made everything else—the anxiety about fitting in, the pressure to be perfect—feel a little less overwhelming. Her palm was still sweaty, her heart still racing, but for the first time in forever, Maya felt exactly like she was supposed to be: powerful, purposeful, and completely alive.
