The Midnight Fox

Maya felt like a **zombie** zombie-walking through AP Chemistry, her brain still foggy from studying until 2 AM. Junior year was slowly killing her, one test at a time. She caught herself staring at the back of Jamie's head again—seriously, she needed to get it together.

That afternoon, she **running** laps around the track, trying to outpace her spiraling thoughts. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Probably her group chat blowing up about Jackson's party this weekend. The one she'd been invited to but wasn't sure she'd survive. Parties weren't exactly her vibe.

She got home to find her **cat**, Luna, sleeping in a sunbeam on the living room rug. Luna was the only one who didn't expect anything from her. No grades, no college applications, no careful curation of her online presence. Just unconditional judgment from across the room.

"At least someone's living their best life," Maya muttered, dropping her backpack.

Later that night, unable to sleep, she spotted movement outside her window. A **fox**—sleek orange fur, intelligent eyes—paused at the edge of the backyard. It looked straight at her, like it knew something she didn't. Then it was gone, disappearing into the darkness like a secret.

The next day at lunch, Jamie slid into the seat across from her. "Hey, I heard you run track."

Maya almost choked on her sandwich. "Yeah?"

"Cool." Jamie's grin was genuine, not performative. "Anyway, a bunch of us are going to Jackson's. You should come. Like, actually come, not just show up and leave early."

Something in Maya's chest did that annoying flutter thing. "Maybe I will."

That night, she thought about the fox again. How it moved through the world like it belonged there, unapologetically itself. She wasn't sure she was ready to stop being a zombie, to stop running from everything real. But maybe, just maybe, she was done waiting in the shadows.
