The Midnight Crown

Milo was supposed to be sleeping, but the full moon was too bright. He sat up in bed—and gasped. His pet goldfish, Goldie, was floating outside her bowl, glowing like a tiny moon.

"We have work to do," Goldie said in a bubbly voice.

Milo's closet creaked open. Out shuffled Zombie—a small green toy Milo had forgotten. But this Zombie wasn't plastic anymore. He was alive, with kind purple eyes and a crooked smile.

"The orange sky is coming," Zombie rasped. "We need the pyramid."

Milo's bookshelf held a golden pyramid puzzle piece from his Egypt museum trip. He'd always wondered why it felt warm, like it held a secret heartbeat.

"The Pharaoh's Magic," Goldie explained. "Every hundred years, it needs someone pure of heart to recharge it. Otherwise, the dreams of all children will fade away."

The orange light she spoke of was already spilling through Milo's window—a beautiful sunset glow, though it was midnight.

Milo placed the pyramid on his windowsill. Orange light wrapped around it like ribbons. The pyramid began to hum, and symbols lit up along its sides.

"Hold my hand," Zombie said gently. His skin turned from green to golden brown, right before Milo's eyes. "I was cursed to look scary. But your belief is breaking the spell."

Goldie swam through the air, creating sparkly bubbles. Each bubble popped into a happy dream that floated out the window and into the world.

Milo felt something heavy appear in his hands—a tiny crown made of real gold, with a note that read: "For the Dream Keeper."

The sun rose. Milo woke in his bed, the crown beside him. On his nightstand sat a healthy-looking action figure (no longer zombie-green) and an extra-hungry goldfish blowing grateful bubbles.

Milo smiled. Sometimes the scariest things just need a little friendship—and magic is real, if you're brave enough to believe.
