The Midnight Chase

Maya's phone buzzed. *Where r u???* The text from Jenna lit up her screen like a neon sign. Maya groaned and shoved it deeper into her hoodie pocket. She wasn't ready to face Jenna's questions about why she'd bailed on the party early.

Then she heard it – a rustle in the bushes behind her. Maya froze, her heart doing that stupid fluttery thing it always did when she watched horror movies with her older brother. A Golden Retriever puppy burst through the bushes, tail wagging like crazy.

"Hey little dude," Maya whispered, crouching down. The dog licked her face, and for a second, everything felt normal. She'd always wanted a dog, but her mom was allergic. Typical.

Then a massive shape emerged from the darkness. Maya's brain barely processed what she was seeing – a bear. An actual freaking bear, emerging from the woods like it owned the place. The puppy let out this tiny yip that was somehow the saddest sound Maya had ever heard.

Maya's legs started running before her brain even caught up. She grabbed the dog's collar – "Buster" according to the tag – and booked it toward the street. Her lungs burned, her sneakers slapped the pavement, and she could hear the heavy crunch of the bear behind her.

"MAYA!" Jenna's voice cut through the night air. Her best friend was standing by Jenna's driveway, phone flashlight waving wildly. Maya sprinted toward her, the bear hot on their heels. They both scrambled into Jenna's car, locking the doors just as the bear lumbered past, completely uninterested in them.

They sat there, breathing hard, the puppy curled between them. "So," Jenna finally said, "you wanna tell me why you're wandering around at midnight with a stolen dog?"

Maya started laughing. She couldn't stop. "I didn't steal him! He found me!" She wiped tears from her eyes. "Jen, I literally just outran a bear. For a dog I've known for five minutes. What is my life?"

Jenna cracked up too. "You're literally the weirdest person I know. Also, your hair looks insane."

They drove Buster back to his house – turns out he lived two streets over. His owner was this cute guy from Maya's history class, who looked completely confused but totally grateful when two disheveled girls showed up at 1 AM with his missing dog.

"Thanks," he said, smiling at Maya. "You're like, actually kind of awesome."

Maya felt her face get hot. Jenna smirked. Later, walking home, Jenna bumped her shoulder. "So... bear chaser, huh?"

"Shut up."

"No seriously, that was honestly the most badass thing I've ever seen. Running from a bear? For a dog? Iconic behavior."

Maya smiled into the darkness. Maybe tonight hadn't been so terrible after all.
