The Midnight Baseball Team

Max hugged his teddy **bear** as thunder rumbled outside. His green zombie action figure stood in the corner, its plastic face frozen in a silly grin. Max had named him Zomby, but kept him on the shelf because… well, zombies were supposed to be scary, right?

Then **LIGHTNING** flashed!

CRACK!

Something magical sparkled through Max's room. His bear, Barnaby, stretched his fuzzy arms. "Good evening, Max," the bear whispered. "I've been waiting for the right storm." Barnaby adjusted a tiny bowtie Max had never noticed before. "I'm actually a secret **SPY** for the Society of Magical Toys. Tonight, I have a mission."

Max's eyes widened as Zomby—the zombie—climbed down from the shelf. "Don't look so surprised!" Zomby said cheerfully. "I've been wanting to say hello for ages. You always look at me like I'm going to eat your brains, but I only want to play!"

"Play what?" Max asked, amazed.

"**BASEBALL**, of course!" Zomby held up a tiny plastic **baseball**. "Out in the yard, under the magic lightning. It's the only time toys can truly play!"

Max crept outside with his magical new friends. The storm had passed, leaving the sky full of stars. They played the most wonderful game—Max, Barnaby the spy bear, and friendly Zomby—laughing as the zombie ran the bases and Barnaby hit home runs.

"My spy mission," Barnaby explained later, as they sat on the grass, "was helping you see that Zomby isn't scary at all. Sometimes, the things we fear just want to be our friends."

Max hugged both toys tight as dawn approached. He learned that courage comes from giving things a chance, and that the best adventures happen when you open your heart to the unexpected.

Now, every time Max looked at Zomby, he didn't see a monster. He saw his midnight baseball buddy—a friend who had been waiting all along for someone to play with under the magical lightning stars.
