The Midnight Baseball Spy
Leo pressed his eye against the telescope, his heart thumping like a drum. Tonight was the night he would finally solve the mystery of Maple Street.
Every night at midnight, strange groans echoed from the old baseball field. Some kids said a zombie roamed there, searching for lost baseballs. But Leo was almost eleven now—too old for ghost stories. He decided to become a spy and find out the truth.
"Operation Zombie is a go," Leo whispered to his cat, Whiskers. She flicked her tail and curled up for a nap. "Fine, I'll go alone."
Leo tiptoed down the stairs in his spy shoes (sneakers with fuzzy socks for silent steps). The moonlight painted everything silver as he crept toward the baseball field. The chain-link gate creaked as he slipped through.
*Groan. Thud.*
Leo ducked behind the pitcher's mound. His hands trembled as he peeked over the top.
A figure shuffled across home plate, arms stretched forward. It let out another moan.
Leo gasped. It really WAS a zombie!
The zombie stopped and seemed to sniff the air. Leo's feet felt glued to the ground. But then—*crack!* The zombie hit something with a baseball bat. *Whack, whack, whack!*
"Hey!" a voice called out. "You're swinging too early! Wait for the pitch!"
Lights flickered on in the dugout. Leo blinked. The zombie was actually OLD MAN MILLER in a bathrobe and sleep mask, practicing his swing! And in the dugout sat Leo's friend Sophie, holding a flashlight and a bucket of baseballs.
"I told you to come in through the back gate," Sophie scolded. "Now Leo's seen your secret."
Mr. Miller pulled up his sleep mask, looking embarrassed. "I'm training for the Senior League Championship," he admitted. "But my back acts up at midnight, so I practice when no one's watching. Sophie catches for me."
Leo's fear melted into giggles. Then curiosity. "Can I pitch?"
"You've got a good arm," Mr. Miller said. "But you need a secret spy name. Mine's Captain Midnight."
"I'm Detective Leo," he said proudly.
And so the Midnight Baseball Club was born—three friends practicing under the stars, their secret safe. Leo learned that scary things aren't always what they seem, and the best mysteries end with new friends.
