The Midnight Baseball Game

Emma's cat Whiskers purred softly as the moon rose over the sleepy town. Emma was supposed to be asleep, but she heard something strange outside—*thwack, thwack, thwack.* Like someone hitting a baseball with a bat.

She peeked through her window and gasped. In the moonlit field behind her house, a gentle bull with glowing golden horns stood at home plate. A scruffy dog danced around him, wagging his tail so hard his whole body wiggled.

But the strangest part was the pitcher. It was Mr. Higgins, Emma's neighbor. But he wasn't his usual self—he shuffled slowly, his arms swung stiff, and he groaned, "Baaaaaall..." in a funny, hollow voice.

Emma rubbed her eyes. Was that a zombie? But not a scary one. A *baseball* zombie!

Her heart raced with excitement. Emma grabbed her glove and tiptoed outside. The cool night air smelled like grass and magic.

"Want to play?" the dog barked happily. Emma nodded, her eyes wide.

The zombie pitcher tossed the ball—it sparkled with stardust. Emma swung her bat and *CRACK!* The ball soared through the night sky, leaving a trail of rainbow light.

"Beautiful!" the bull rumbled in a voice like thunder, but kind thunder.

They played until the first pink light of dawn. Emma learned something wonderful that night: sometimes the strangest games make the best friends. The zombie pitcher wasn't scary at all—he just loved baseball as much as she did.

As Whiskers curled up on Emma's bed the next morning, she found a small glowing baseball under her pillow. And sometimes, when the moon is bright, she can still hear them playing in the field—*thwack, thwack, thwack*—inviting her to join their magical midnight game.
