The Midnight Baseball Game

Leo lay in bed, clutching his stuffed bull Ferdinand tight. Tomorrow was the big championship baseball game, and his stomach fluttered with nervous butterflies.

"What if I drop the ball?" he whispered to Ferdinand. The bull's button eyes seemed to twinkle in the moonlight.

Suddenly, Ferdinand twitched. Then he stretched—and shook his fuzzy head. "Leo, my friend, fear is just excitement holding its breath!"

Leo gasped as his shelf began to stir. Bernard the bear climbed down, his honey-colored fur glowing softly. From the toy chest emerged Captain Clomp, a toy zombie who loved brains—brainteasers, that was his favorite game.

"Tonight," Bernard rumbled, "we play baseball under the stars. No strikeouts allowed here."

They crept to the backyard where fireflies danced like floating diamonds. The baseball diamond was painted in moonbeams.

Captain Clomp shuffled to home plate, his plastic arms clanking happily. "I call batter! My zombie reflexes are... slowly... improving!"

Ferdinand pitched, and even though his hooves weren't made for throwing, the ball sailed perfectly. CLUNK—Captain Clomp hit it with a satisfying crack.

Round and round the bases they ran. Bernard's big paws thudded gently. Ferdinand galloped with surprising grace. Captain Clomp shuffle-ran with goofy determination.

When Leo finally took his turn, everything felt different. The night air sparkled with possibility. The bull cheered, the bear roared encouragement, the zombie did a wobbly victory dance.

Leo swung—WHAP! The ball soared through fireflies and moonlight, landing somewhere among the stars.

"Home run!" they all cheered together.

As dawn peeked over the horizon, the friends returned to their places. Leo snuggled under his quilt, Ferdinand in his arms.

"Remember," Bernard whispered from the shelf, "the magic isn't in being perfect. It's in playing with friends who believe in you."

Leo smiled, butterflies gone. In his dreams, he could still hear the wonderful sound—baseballs connecting with bats, laughter under moonlight, and the sweet music of friends playing together.

The real game would be wonderful too. Because now Leo knew the best secret of all: with friends by your side, every swing is a home run.
