The Midnight Baseball Game
Timmy loved baseball, but he was too shy to join the neighborhood team. Every evening, he'd practice pitching in his backyard under the stars, dreaming of being brave.
One hot July night, the backyard pool glowed with an unusual silver light. Timmy crept closer and gasped. In the water's reflection, the stars were swirling like magic paint. Suddenly, the reflection of the Big Bear constellation stretched its paws and climbed RIGHT OUT of the water!
"We're late for the game!" rumbled the bear, whose name was Bruno. He was enormous but gentle, with fur like midnight clouds.
From the other side of the pool, a magnificent bull with golden horns trotted out. "Barnaby doesn't like waiting!" the bull declared, but his kind eyes twinkled.
"The what?" Timmy whispered, clutching his baseball.
"The Midnight Baseball Game!" Bruno explained. "Every night, when children are dreaming, the sky creatures play. But tonight... tonight our baseball is missing."
"Without it," added Barnaby, "the Milky Way will stop flowing, and shooting stars will forget how to fly."
Timmy looked at his baseball, then at the magical creatures. His heart hammered. He'd never played with anyone before. But Bruno looked so sad, and Barnaby so worried.
"I... I have a ball," Timmy squeaked. "And I can pitch!"
The bear and bull exchanged surprised glances. "You'd play with us?" Bruno asked.
Timmy nodded, stepped onto the pool's edge, and threw the most perfect pitch of his life. The ball sailed through the air, leaving trails of stardust.
"HOORAY!" bellowed Barnaby, catching it easily. "You're BRAVE!"
They played until dawn—bear, bull, and boy—under a sky that cheered with twinkling applause. Timmy wasn't shy anymore.
That morning, his mom found him asleep with a smile, baseball clutched tight. And that afternoon? Timmy walked right up to the neighborhood coach and said, "I'd like to join the team."
Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is say 'yes' to an adventure—especially when it finds you first.
