The Midnight Baseball Game
Max loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his worn-out glove and run to the empty field behind his house. But Max had a secret – his baseball games weren't always ordinary.
One warm summer evening, as the sun painted the sky orange and pink, Max heard rustling in the bushes. A curious nose poked out – it was an enormous brown bull! Max froze, but the bull just blinked his gentle eyes and trotted over. Around his neck hung an old, dusty baseball cap.
"You must be Bessie's bull," Max whispered. The farmer's daughter Bessie had told him stories about their friendly bull who loved watching people play. The bull sat down and watched Max practice his pitching.
That's when Max saw something strange – a lopsided figure shambling toward the field. It looked like a zombie, with messy green hair and dragging one leg! Max's heart raced, but then he heard a familiar giggle.
"Gotcha!" yelled his best friend Leo, pulling off his zombie mask. "My mom made this costume for Halloween. I wanted to scare you!"
Max laughed so hard he fell on the grass. "You looked so scary – for a second!"
"Want to play catch?" Leo asked, pulling out his own glove. "Bessie said we could borrow her bull as a mascot if we wanted."
The bull clapped his hooves together excitedly. Max and Leo played baseball until the stars came out, with the bull cheering them on. And from that night on, they became the most unusual baseball team in town – two boys, one friendly bull, and lots of imagination.
That's the magical thing about friendship – it comes in all shapes and sizes, sometimes even with four legs and horns.
