The Midnight Baseball Game

Lily loved her golden retriever, Barnaby. He wasn't just a dog—he was her best friend and partner in everything. One summer night, they couldn't sleep, so they crept outside to the empty baseball field behind their house.

Under the full moon, something magical happened. The dusty diamond began to glow! Suddenly, ghostly players appeared—zombie baseball players, but not scary ones. They were translucent blue and green, floating slightly above the ground, smiling and waving.

"Want to play?" asked a friendly zombie pitcher. His voice sounded like wind through autumn leaves.

Lily's eyes widened. "But I'm not very good at baseball."

"Neither were we!" laughed a zombie batter. "That's why we practice every midnight. Everyone starts somewhere!"

Barnaby barked happily, tail wagging, and joined the zombie team as their mascot. The magical baseball game began, but it wasn't like any game Lily had ever played. When she swung and missed, the whole team cheered, "Good try! Next time will be better!" When she finally hit the glowing ball, it sparkled through the air like a comet.

Lily learned something wonderful that night: the best games aren't about winning—they're about playing together with kindness.

As dawn approached, the zombie players faded away. "Come back anytime!" they called. "We're always looking for friends who love to play!"

Lily and Barnaby returned home, tired but happy. The next day at school, when other kids struggled at baseball, Lily cheered them on instead of laughing. A friend does that—helps others believe in themselves.

And every full moon since, Lily and Barnaby return to the midnight baseball field, where the game is always magical, and everyone is welcome to play.
