The Midnight Baseball Game
Lily loved her cat, Muffin, more than anything in the world. Muffin was no ordinary cat—she had the softest, fluffiest orange hair that shimmered like sunshine when she purred. Every night, Muffin would curl up beside Lily's pillow, and they would dream together.
One summer evening, Lily was practicing baseball in her backyard. She tossed the ball up, swung her bat, and—whoosh—the ball sailed over the fence and disappeared into the mysterious woods beyond.
"I'll find it tomorrow," Lily sighed, but something tugged at her heart. That baseball was special. Her grandfather had given it to her, and it felt lucky.
That night, Lily heard a soft meow. She opened her eyes to see Muffin sitting by the window, her orange hair glowing in the moonlight. The cat tapped the glass with her paw.
"What is it, Muffin?" Lily whispered.
Muffin meowed again and darted out the door. Without thinking, Lily slipped on her shoes and started running after her. Muffin led her through the backyard, past the garden, and right to the edge of the dark woods.
Lily had never been in the woods at night. Fireflies danced around her like tiny floating stars. The trees whispered secrets in the wind. And there, in a small clearing, she saw something amazing.
Her baseball was glowing softly on the ground. Around it, a group of woodland creatures had gathered—a rabbit with velvet-soft ears, a wise old owl, and even a shy little fox. They were all watching Muffin, who stood proudly beside the baseball.
"Muffin found your lucky ball," the owl seemed to say with a gentle hoot. "She wanted to return it before you could be sad."
Lily realized something wonderful. Her cat had been running through the dark woods just to help her. Friendship wasn't just about playing together—it was about caring for each other, even when it meant being brave.
"Thank you, Muffin," Lily said, hugging her cat tight. The creatures cheered silently as fireflies created a magical celebration around them.
From that night on, Lily and Muffin had a secret. The woods weren't scary anymore—they were full of friends. And whenever Lily played baseball, she always made sure Muffin could watch from her favorite spot on the porch, her orange hair shining like a tiny sun.
