The Midnight Baseball Game
Lily couldn't sleep. The moonlight spilled through her window like liquid silver, calling her outside. She tiptoed to the backyard, where the family's swimming pool glowed with an otherworldly blue light. The water rippled though there was no wind.
Suddenly, the surface of the pool began to bubble. A giant polar bear emerged, shaking water from his snowy fur like a dog after a bath. Lily wanted to run, but something in the bear's gentle eyes made her stay.
"I'm Barnaby," the bear rumbled softly. "Care to play?" From behind his ear, he pulled out a tiny baseball that expanded to normal size in his paw.
Lily's cat, Mittens, who had followed her outside, purred loudly and wound around the bear's massive legs. Barnaby laughed—a sound like rocks tumbling in a stream—and scratched behind Mittens' ears.
They played baseball under the stars, the bear's massive hits sending balls soaring into constellations. Each time Mittens caught a fly ball in her mouth, fireworks of purple and gold exploded across the sky.
"You know," Barnaby said between innings, sitting beside the pool with his feet in the water, "sometimes the most magical friends are the ones you least expect."
Lily looked at the enormous bear, her tiny cat, and the glowing pool. "Will I see you again?"
Barnaby smiled, sliding back into the water. "Whenever the moon calls and your heart is open, I'll return."
As dawn painted the sky pink, Lily carried a sleeping Mittens back to bed. The pool looked ordinary again, but in the grass lay a baseball made of starlight—proof that magic exists for those who believe.
From that night on, Lily learned that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes, and that the most wonderful adventures happen when you're brave enough to say 'yes' to the unexpected.
