The Midnight Baseball Game

The old wooden baseball bat leaned against the fence, gathering moonlight. Ten-year-old Leo had found it that afternoon, and something about it felt magical. When the clock struck midnight, he heard a tiny meow from the garden.

A sleek black cat with glowing green eyes sat by the back door. 'I'm Midnight,' the cat whispered. 'Want to play baseball?' Leo rubbed his eyes. Cats didn't talk!

Midnight led him through the backyard, past the swimming pool that shimmered like liquid stars. 'The Zombie Games happen every full moon,' she explained. 'But don't worry—these zombies love baseball more than brains!'

In the moonlit field beyond the woods, Leo gasped. Friendly zombie creatures shuffled around—some green, some purple, all wearing team jerseys. They weren't scary at all! One zombie named Zara handed Leo a ball. 'Pitch to me!'

Leo threw. Zara hit the ball with a satisfying CRACK. It sailed through the air until—FLASH! A bolt of lightning struck the outfield, turning into a sparkling slide. 'Home run!' Zara cheered.

They played until dawn, the zombies teaching Leo their special moves. When the sun began to rise, Midnight nudged him. 'Time to go.'

'The lightning,' Leo wondered. 'Was that magic?'

Midnight purred. 'Friendship is the real magic, Leo. Every full moon, the baseball field waits for kind hearts who judge by actions, not appearances.'

Leo woke in his bed, the wooden bat beside him. Had it been a dream? A single black cat hair on his pillow said otherwise. And from that night on, whenever he saw someone who looked different, he remembered his zombie friends and smiled—because the best friends sometimes come from the most unexpected places.
