The Midnight Baseball Game
Lily couldn't sleep. Thunder rumbled outside her window, and flashes of lightning lit up her room like a strobe light. She peeked through the curtains and gasped.
In the backyard, something magical was happening. A giant bear stood on home plate, holding a baseball bat. A sleek black cat sat behind him, wearing a tiny catcher's mask.
"Are you going to spy on us all night?" the bear called out, spotting Lily at the window. "Or would you like to play?"
Lily rubbed her eyes. Was she dreaming? The bear's fur shimmered with starlight, and the cat's whiskers sparkled like silver threads.
"Come down!" the cat meowed. "We need one more player for our midnight baseball game!"
Lily tiptoed downstairs and out the back door. The storm clouds had parted, revealing a sky full of twinkling stars. The bear handed her a glowing baseball.
"I'm Barnaby," the bear said gently. "And this is Whiskers. Every night when lightning storms come, we play baseball. The lightning helps us see!"
"But why at night?" Lily asked.
"Because," Whiskers purred, "magic only happens when the world is asleep. And because friendship is like lightning—it flashes bright and connects everything."
Lily stepped up to home plate. Barnaby pitched the ball. CRACK! She hit it perfectly, and the baseball streaked through the sky like a shooting star.
"Home run!" Barnaby cheered, lifting Lily onto his furry shoulders. She felt like she could touch the moon.
They played until dawn painted the sky pink. As the first birds began to sing, Barnaby and Whiskers grew fainter.
"Will you come back?" Lily called.
"Whenever you need a friend," Barnaby whispered. "Just look for the lightning."
Lily woke up in her bed, sunlight streaming through her window. Had it been a dream? She reached into her pocket and found something—a small, glowing baseball button that shimmered like starlight.
She smiled, knowing that magic and friendship are real, sometimes you just have to stay awake to find them.
