The Midnight Baseball Game
Leo sat on his porch, wearing his favorite red hat. His golden retriever, Barnaby, nudged his hand with a wet nose.
"I wish I had someone to play with," Leo sighed.
Suddenly, his hat began to glow! Sparkles swirled around him like tiny fireflies. Barnaby's tail wagged so hard it thumped against the porch swing.
"Put on your hat!" a voice said.
Leo looked around. "Who said that?"
"Me! Barnaby!" The dog was standing on two legs, grinning. "Your magical hat lets you understand animals! Come quickly—the Midnight Baseball Game starts in ten minutes!"
Leo grabbed his mitt and followed Barnaby to the meadow behind their house. But this wasn't the same meadow. Moonflowers bloomed as big as beach balls. Cricket players stretched on glowing grass.
"Welcome!" shouted a rabbit wearing a tiny umpire mask. "Tonight's special—eating spinach gives you the power to jump as high as the clouds!"
A bowl of emerald-green spinach appeared beside home plate. Leo wrinkled his nose. He hated spinach.
"You don't have to eat it," Barnaby whispered. "But you'll miss all the fun."
Leo looked at the rabbit players bounding into the sky, catching stars instead of balls. He pinched his nose and took a bite. Crunch. It tasted like sunshine and rainbows!
Suddenly, Leo's feet felt light as feathers. He leaped—and soared right over the backstop!
"You're up!" Barnaby called, tossing him a star-ball.
Leo swung with all his might. CRACK! The star-ball streaked through the night sky, leaving a trail of sparkles. It flew past the moon and kept going!
"HOME RUN!" all the animals cheered.
That night, Leo learned that trying new things—even spinach—can lead to the most magical adventures. And the best part? Now every time he wore his hat, he and Barnaby had wonderful adventures together.
