The Midnight Baseball Game

Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he practiced in his backyard, dreaming of hitting a home run. But Leo had no friends to play with. He was lonely.

One night, Leo heard strange sounds coming from the forest behind his house. He peeked out his window and gasped. There, in the moonlight, was a giant grizzly bear! And standing next to the bear was Leo's own orange cat, Marmalade.

"What are you DOING?" Leo whispered, watching in amazement.

The bear held a baseball bat made from a sturdy tree branch. Marmalade the cat batted a perfect pitch. *THWACK!* The ball soared into the sky, glowing with sparkling light.

Leo tiptoed outside. "Hello?"

The bear and cat looked at him. The bear waved shyly. Marmalade purred and rubbed against Leo's legs.

"I'm Barnaby," said the bear in a rumbly but gentle voice. "And Marmalade said you like baseball too."

Leo's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"All the animals talk at night," Barnaby said with a smile. "Would you like to play?"

They played the most magical game of baseball. Marmalade was an amazing pitcher, and Barnaby hit the ball so far it seemed to disappear into the stars. Leo laughed and ran, feeling pure joy.

When the game ended, Barnaby reached into his fur and pulled out a glowing golden berry. "This is a courage vitamin," he explained. "One bite gives you bravery for a whole day."

Leo took the berry and ate it. Warmth spread through him. He felt ready for anything.

"Thank you," Leo said, hugging his new friends. "Will I see you again?"

"Every night," promised Barnaby. "Just look for the moonlight."

The next day at school, Leo walked tall. He wasn't lonely anymore. During recess, he swung at a baseball with confidence. The other kids gathered round.

"Wow," they said. "You're amazing! Want to play with us?"

Leo grinned, thinking of his secret friends. "Yes," he said. "I'd love to."

Now Leo had daytime friends too. But the very best games, he knew, would always happen when the moon rose high and the magic began.
