The Midnight Baseball Game
Lily loved her goldfish, Sparkle, more than anything. But she loved her worn-out teddy bear, Barnaby, almost as much. Every night, she'd whisper her secrets to them both.
One starry night, Lily heard a strange _thwack_ sound from the backyard. Being a curious girl, she decided to _spy_ through the window, just like the detectives in her favorite books.
What she saw made her rub her eyes. A glowing baseball field appeared in her yard, filled with twinkling lights like fireflies. And standing on the pitcher's mound was a enormous brown _bear_ wearing a baseball cap!
"Come play!" the bear called, waving a massive paw.
Lily ran outside, her heart pounding with excitement. The bear's name was Bruno, and he explained that he was the Star Pitcher for the Midnight Baseball League, a magical game played by moonlight when children were fast asleep.
"But our team is losing," Bruno said sadly. "We need someone who believes in magic to help us win."
Lily wanted to help, but she wasn't very good at baseball. She looked back at her window, where Sparkle's fishbowl glimmered softly.
"I have an idea!" Lily said.
She brought Barnaby and Sparkle outside. To her amazement, her teddy bear grew to life, stretching his fuzzy arms. And Sparkle... well, Sparkle began to float above his bowl, glowing like a tiny golden moon!
"I may be small," Sparkle bubbled, "but I can see everything from above. I'll be your spy in the sky!"
Barnaby stood at first base, Bruno pitched, and Lily swung with all her might. Sparkle floated above, calling out where the ball would fly. CRACK! Lily hit the ball right over the moon!
They played until dawn, and Lily's team won by one magical run.
"Remember," Bruno told her as he faded into the morning mist, "magic lives wherever you find friendship."
Lily woke up in her bed, wondering if it had all been a dream. But on her desk sat her baseball cap, covered in sparkling golden dust, and Barnaby wore a tiny baseball glove.
Sometimes, she still spies on the backyard at midnight. And sometimes, just sometimes, she sees the glowing field appear, waiting for the next magical game to begin.
