The Midnight Baseball Game
Emma loved her old teddy bear, Barnaby. He had one eye missing and his fur was matted, but he was her best friend. Every night, she whispered her secrets to him before bed.
One full-moon night, Emma heard a strange thumping sound coming from the backyard. She grabbed Barnaby and peeked out the window. What she saw made her gasp!
A zombie was playing baseball all alone! But this wasn't a scary zombie like in movies. He was green and raggedy, yes, but he wore a bright red cap and swung an old wooden bat with such joy that Emma couldn't look away.
"Want to play?" the zombie called out, spotting Emma at the window. His voice sounded like crunching autumn leaves.
Emma stepped outside, still holding Barnaby. "I'm Emma. This is Barnaby Bear."
"I'm Zed!" The zombie smiled, showing surprisingly straight teeth. "Want to join my midnight baseball team?"
Emma's dad's old baseball glove sat on the porch. She slipped it on. Zed tossed her a baseball that glowed softly in the moonlight.
"What if I miss?" Emma asked nervously.
"That's the best part!" Zed cheered. "In midnight baseball, missing is just practicing for your next hit!"
They played for hours. Zed taught Emma to swing with her whole body, not just her arms. Barnaby sat behind home plate, his one eye watching proudly. Every time Emma hit the ball, it left trails of sparkles in the air.
"You're a natural!" Zed high-fived her with his mossy hand. "Tomorrow, bring your friends. Midnight baseball is always more fun with a team!"
Before sunrise, Zed had to go. "See you next full moon!" he waved, disappearing into the woods.
Emma ran inside to grab her mom's old iPhone and snap a picture of the glowing baseball still sitting in the yard. It showed only a regular ball in the grass, but Emma knew better.
That night, Emma learned something magical: sometimes the things that seem scary at first might just be lonely friends waiting to be found. And everyone deserves someone to play with, no matter how different they might be.
Now every full moon, Emma and all the neighborhood kids gather in the backyard. They play baseball with Zed and his magical, mossy friends until dawn. Barnaby keeps score, and the winning team always gets extra sprinkles on their morning pancakes.
